A bit from the history
The performance A Walk Worthwhile was originally created by the legendary co-authors Jiří Suchý and Jiří Šlitr. Several generations of spectators have grown up on the original music of Jiří Šlitr, poetic texts of Jiří Suchý and on the whole Semafor theatre as such. Jiří Suchý and Jiří Šlitr have become true legends of Czech popular music and theatre. Hence, let us introduce the duo of authors, actors and singers to a foreign audience.
Semafor Theatre – the title is an acronym of the words ”seven small forms“, i. e. the seven different theatre/musical genres the theatre had (was to have) in its repertoire. Semafor was launched by the musical comedy Člověk z půdy (The Man From The Loft) by the authors Suchý and Šlitr, with Miroslav Horníček playing the lead role. The golden age of Semafor was between 1960 and 1969, a period in which the opera buffa A Walk Worthwhile (1965) came to life too. A Walk Worthwhile was premiered on 15 June 1965 at the Semafor theatre and experienced a total of 64 reruns, as well as an adaptation in the form of a television film in 1966. It ranked among the Semafor's greatest successes. At that time the two co-authors rendered the roles of the Lawyer – Jiří Šlitr – and the Postman – Jiří Suchý.photo: archive of Jiří Suchý
