Synopsis
A young married couple, Uli and Vanilla, have just decided to get divorced and are each living in one half of a flat. The strained atmosphere is further disturbed by the Lawyer, coming to instruct them about the di¬vorce proceedings, and singing odes to the joys of divorce. The situation, however, begins to get really fraught upon the arrival of another intruder – the Postman, bearing a mysterious telegram from Liverpool. The telegram announces that Vanilla's wealthy Aunt has died, and that the as-yet unborn offspring of Vanilla and Uli is to inherit a million pounds. Seeing a chance to become incredibly wealthy, Uli and Vanilla start to reconcile. However, the Lawyer begins making overtures to Vanilla too, since, in his words, the father is not relevant in terms of law. Vanilla seeks salvation, while also striving for a cunning solution to her situation, in the form of the bashful Postman. She attempts to seduce him, but the Postman does not understand what is going on and tries to escape her clutches. At the height of the confusion he pulls out another telegram in which Aunt lets it be known that her plane is about to touch down. The startled Vanilla, Uli, Postman and Lawyer behold the living Aunt walking in through the door, and, together with her, all the attendant wealth and luxury.
On the next day, the Lawyer stops by at Vanilla and Uli's flat en route to the court. However, when Aunt wants to discuss matters pertaining to her last will and testament, he suddenly declares his pressing du¬ties aren't quite as pressing as they would appear and readily devotes to her. Aunt has decided to change her will in such a manner that each of Vanilla and Uli's children will inherit a million pounds of its own, which sends the Lawyer into poetic raptures, and he presently begins wooing her. Uli too, who unpleas¬antly surprises Aunt with tidings of divorce, turns his attention to her and her wealth. When Uli's drunken, clumsy attempted seduction is curtailed by the indignant Vanilla, Aunt tries to pacify her with a cheque for a million pounds, and then proceeds to drop dead. Uli and the Lawyer again change the tar¬get of their interest and each strives to convince Vanilla that he is the right man for her to spend her life with. Vanilla again seeks salvation in the Postman who, however, flees from her and eventually disappears mysteriously. Just like wealth itself, Aunt and the good-natured Postman, everything has proved to be mere illusion, a theatre fantasy.
